PREPARE YOUR CONTENT

Create your profile

The profile area is where your peers and your lecturers see who you are in the AUT Mahara system. Your profile picture is a visual representation of yourself.

The Create area is where you can upload and store your file collections. You can have different types of files stored in this area, such as documents, images, videos, journal entries and resume information. And they are available for you to select and load to your portfolio pages. The Create -> Files area is your file storage area. This is like your shoe box where you collect all your photos ready to put into your photo albums.

Upload files to Mahara

You can upload files to Mahara (and organise them into folders) so that you can make documents and other work available for others to see once it is added to a portfolio page.

To upload a file, you will need to click on Create>  Files option from the Main menu.

Before you upload your file, you must first tick the checkbox to agree that you are not breaching any copyright associated with the document/file you are uploading.

Build your portfolio

In Mahara, you can create as many Portfolio pages as you like under the Create -> Pages and Collections area. A Portfolio page is a web page where you can showcase your work. It's like creating a photo album by adding relevant photos in and you can have as many albums as you like. On a portfolio page, you can add text, documents, images and videos, etc.

Set up a journal and post journal entries

The Journal is a tool with which you can record your thoughts and experiences online. By adding your journal or individual posts from the journal to a page, you can allow other users to place feedback and comments on your journal.

A number of papers at AUT require students to maintain a reflective journal as part of the course requirement, so using the Journal tool in Mahara is an ideal place to keep a reflective commentary of your development.

Note: Anything you enter in your Journal is private – until you decide when to include it into the contents of a “Page”. You can then share this page with other people.

To set up a Journal, you will need to go to Create > Journals under the Main menu

File size limit and file storage quota

When you upload your file, a single file size cannot exceed 10MB. The total file storage space under your Mahara account is 200MB. You may request for more storage space via the Contact Us link.

Mahara is not designed to be a file storage system. If uploading videos or graphics that are large it is best to host them somewhere else. For example, Youtube, Panopto, OneDrive or Dropbox, etc. Also, you may use file compression to reduce file size of multimedia files.
